Brigham Young University (often referred to as BYU or, colloquially, "The Y")
is a private university located in Provo, Utah, United States. It is owned and
operated by The
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), and, excluding

A commonly used flag is a blue horizontal flag (http://dmblood.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54f900c8e8833017d3bfa03ca970c-800wi,

Brigham Young University, located in Provo, Utah (US), is the nexus for the higher education of members of the Church of Latter Day Saints, otherwise known as the Mormons. In recent years the university has
established satellite centers at Laie, Hawaii, and Rexburg, Idaho. Although neither the student body nor the faculty/staff are exclusively Mormon, non-Mormons are expected to adhere outwardly to the practices and teachings of the church, i.e., no coffee, no smoking, a proper spirit of respect if not of reverence for church scriptures and teachings, etc.
The university archives have a b&w photograph of the preparation of the BYU flag in 1971 as part of the inauguration ceremony of a new university president. The accompanying text provides details of the designer, the seamstress who prepared the flag, and its design and composition.
I hope to find a colored image of the flag to submit as well. In any event, there can be no question about the official status of this flag.

Blue and white versions of the Y flag, are the only ones that I have seen in
use:

I did
find a picture with a university seal, but it may be an ROTC flag.

In the
link provided originally by Ron Lahav a full description of
the flag is available, as follows: "A new BYU flag, designed by Alex Darais
of the art faculty, right, and made by the "Betsey Ross" of the BYU Campus
Couture, Jerry Campbell, left, was first flown at the inauguration of
President (Dallin H.) Oaks. Professor Darais's design was chosen from among
dozens of entries submitted in the competition and reviewed by BYU executives
and the Office of the Church Commissioner of Educatino (sic) (Education). The
flag consists of two horizontal stripes in the school's colors of white and
royal blue."BYU" appears in blue modified block letters on a white background
on the lower half of the flag. The traditional symbol of the beehive appears
in gold on the blue upper portion, along with the University motto, "The Glory
of God is Intelligence." Although BYU previously had other flags, none could
be found for the inauguration."

The motto refers to a theme, "The glory of God is intelligence, or light and
truth —a fullness of which can be obtained by mortal man only through
obedience to eternal laws." (source:

this message.
It is important to notice that Alex Basil Darais, a
Designer and Painter, also designed the Centennial Celebration (1875-1975)
symbol, with the theme "a fruitful tree": "Art Professor Alex B. Darais
displays the symbol he designed for the Brigham Young University Centennial
celebration, to be used on all graphic materials involved with the
observance, such as letterheads, envelopes, pennants, decals, printed
programs, souvenirs, advertisements, flags, and other items."

This is the flag which is flown at the College Football Hall of Fame, and as you can see it differs materially from the official flag of 1971.
