Flag of Borovnica, horizontal and vertical versions - Images by Željko Heimer, 26 December 2007
The flag and arms of Borovnica are prescribed by Decision Odlok o grbu in zastavi Občine Borovnica, adopted on 1 March 2007 and published on 16 March 2007 in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, No. 23.
The symbols are described in Article 6 of the municipal Statutes Statut Občine Borovnica, adopted on 13 November 2016 and published on 28 October 2016 in Uradni list Republike Slovenije, No. 67 (text).
The symbols were designed by Valt Jurečič of Heraldika d.o.o. and Heraldica Slovenica.
The flag, in proportions 2:5, is blue with the viaduct from the coat of arms set in the first square, separated from the rest of the flag by a thin white stripe (in width 1/32 of the flag length).
The flag prescribed for vertical hoisting has the coat of arms properly rotated.

The coat of arms of Borovnica, "Azure on a base vert a two-storied, six-arched viaduct argent", is very much based on the previous coat of arms.
The center of Borovnica is dominated by a column, indeed the remains of the 500-m long masonry railway viaduct, which was considered among the greatest building achievements of the 19th century. The coat of arms of Borovnica shows the silhouette of the former viaduct, which was bombed down in the Second World War.

Former flag and arms of Borovnica - Imaged by Željko Heimer, 31 December 2005
According to Stanič & Jakopič [j2s05], Borovnica already used symbols when still a local community, part of Vrhnika, from which it separated in 1995.
The flag was light blue with the municipal coat of arms in the middle. Stanič & Jakopič show the flag in proportions 1:2 but a drawing supplied by the municipal administration in May 2003 shows it with proportions ~7:10.
The former coat of arms of Borovnica featured the column, as well as the silhouette of the former viaduct described above.
The local community considered the adoption of symbols and called for ideas (Naš časopis, Glasilo občine Vrhnika, No. 179, February 1992).
The local priest and a few others submitted proposals, including the depiction of old documents, flowers, St. Christopher, a glass of water... (Naš časopis, Glasilo občine Vrhnika, No. 180, March 1992).
Surveyed about the symbols they would like for the town, most citizens included the bridge, the waterfalls, and the viaduct column. A public competition was announced, with deadline scheduled to 30 August 1992 (Naš časopis, Glasilo občine Vrhnika, No. 182, May 1992).
Four designs out of the 10 submitted were published for citizen's vote, the design eventually selected included (Naš časopis, Glasilo občine Vrhnika, No. 185, September 1992).
The design submitted by Tone Pintar, from Žiri, was selected by 70% of the voters (Naš časopis, Glasilo občine Vrhnika, No. 191, March 1993).
