The arms are two fish Azure hooked and lined mouth-to-mouth naiant and counternaiant set in pale and eight fishhooks Gules in orle. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "S. JOÃO DA PESQUEIRA"
Meaning:
These arms are partly canting, for "pesqueira" means something like "fishing place".

Presentation of São João da Pesqueira

São João da Pesqueira municipality had 8653 inhabitants in 2001 and consists of 11 communes covering 267,56 km². It is part of Viseu District, traditional province and 1999 ref. adm. region Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, C.C.R. / NUTS II Norte, and NUTS III Douro.
São João da Pesqueira is the currently existing settlement in Portugal with the oldest charter, a 1055 rights granting document, issued by Fernando I of Leon and Castile.
