Located in Niigata City Niigata Prefecture and established in 1949. The embroidered ceremonial flag has green background with a purple, sky blue , white and yellow emblem in the center and horizontal gold kanji and silver English university name in gold fringe. Adopted in 1999. The flag has a motif of the university emblem and the Niigata University logo on a green background, the university color. The flag also has a bright background color with a view to contrasting with the person standing in front of it at events. The university flag has white background with a black and green emblem in the center and horizontally written in black Kanji university name. There is a variant with English text below the Japanese text. In 1949, the student emblem in the shape of a snowflake was adopted. In 1999, as part of the 50th anniversary of the university, the university emblem and the university flag were adopted in the motif of the student emblem. The originator of the Niigata University student emblem (later the school emblem) was Chohei Yoshikawa, who graduated from Niigata University in 1953.
