The embroidered ceremonial flag is called the flag of the phoenix and dragon. The grey-red quarterly divided flag has a gold and silver emblem in the center and a gold fringe. The institute flag has purple background with a gold-colored emblem in the center and horizontally written in white the institute name in Chinese characters. The institute emblem was selected from a wide range of designs solicited from staff, students, and alumni, and the work of Takeo Nakayama, a 1924 mechanical engineering graduate, was selected. The significance of this design is that it embodies the spirit of Meiji Vocational School. The red and grey (heavy rat color) of the ground color imitates the solidity of steel and cast iron, and is also a symbol of industry. The central form resembles a dragon but is not a dragon, a phoenix but is not a phoenix, and is a spirit that truly transcends the dragon and phoenix. The wings spreading from the eyes to the ears express the surpassing wisdom and infinite knowledge, and the beads in the huge mouth signify the activities of the institute, which is to be called high in the world with the virtue of luminosity and perfection. The institute's activities are explained as follows.
