Flag

Located in Mito City Ibaraki Prefecture and established in 1949. The embroiderd ceremonial flag has dark green background charged with a silver and gold emblem in the center and vertically written gold kanji university name at hoist and gold fringe. The emblem is a design of a silver wild thorn leaf with the gold kanji word "大學" (=university) inside. In 1949, when Ibaraki University was founded, it was decided to establish a university emblem, and when the university solicited designs from the general public, a considerable number of entries were received. These designs were displayed on campus and voted on by popular vote, and the one designed by Takeo Omichi, then a professor in the Faculty of Education, was adopted.
