Presentation of Murter-Kornati

The municipality of Murter-Kornati (2,075 inhabitants in 2001, 2,068 in the village of Murter-Kornati) is located 30 km north of Šibenik, covering the northern part of the island of the same name. The municipal territory covers also the National Park of Kornati, the series of beautiful islands off the coast between Šibenik and Zadar.
The name of the municipality was changed from Murter to Murter-Kornati by the Law on Local Subdivisions of 13 July 2006.

Flag of Murter-Kornati

The symbols of Murter-Kornati (municipal website, images), approved on 1 February 2017 the Ministry of Administration (Rudina Press, 6 March 2017; Šibenski Portal, 7 March 2017), are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Murter-Kornati, adopted on 30 March 2017 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 25 April 2017 in the official municipal gazette Službeni glasnik Općine Murter-Kornati, No. 1 (text).

The flag is in proportions 1:2, white with coat of arms bordered in blue in the centre. This is the first and only case in Croatian municipal vexillology that I am aware of a coat of arms on a flag being bordered in blue - the border is usually golden/yellow, rarely white and, in only a few cases, red.

In September 2016, the municipality published a series of designs prepared by the the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka, asking the inhabitants for their opinion (Šibenski Portal, 5 September 2016; municipal website, municipal Facebook profile).
After some consultation a new set of designs was posted (images).

Decision Odluka o pokretanju postupka za utvrđivanje grba i zastava Općine Murter, adopted on 18 January 2001 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 12 June 2001 in the County official gazette Službeni vjesnik Šibensko-kninske županije, No. 6, set up a five-member commission to prepare and conduct a contest and to present the best design to the Assembly.

The coat of arms is "Azure a triangle embowed dexterwise argent throughout within a bordure of the last with ten triangles of the first".
The embowed triangle represents a Latin sail testifying the maritime traditions, while the triangles within the bordure stand for numerous islands the municipality in composed of, allegedly the municipality with most islands in the Mediterranean area.
