The municipality of Sublaines (185 inhabitants in 2018; 1,444 ha) is located 20 km south-east of Tours.

Flag of Sublaines

The flag of Sublaines is white with the municipal arms, "Per bend sinister, 1. Azure a little bustard argent, 2. Vert a fleur-de-lis or", surmounted by the name of the municipality.

The village only had "a small framed coat of arms located in the Town Hall". The new mayor, Jérôme Jarry was keen that his village also has a flag that can be placed in front of the Town Hall, next to the European, French, Center-Val de Loire and Touraine region flags. "It was not easy because we only had this small model of framed coat of arms but we managed to make a correct digital version of it and the Pavoifêtes company in Tours managed to get a flag" that was put it in place for November 11, explains the mayor.
The coat of arms features a little bustard, a bird emblematic of the area. The ears of wheat stand for agriculture, important for this rural village, as well. The fleur-de-lis is "an inseparable symbol of France and its history” while the crown stands “for the castles in the Loire valley" adds the mayor.

Champeigne Tourangelle (website), proclaimed a Bird Special Protection Area on 25 April 2006, is one of the six sites forming the Natura 2000 network in Indre-et-Loire. Composed of two grain-growing plains separated by river Indre, Champeigne Tourangelle covers 13,800 ha. The north-eastern part include parts of the municipalities of Athée-sur-Cher, Bléré, Cigogne, Sublaines, Lueille, Le Liège, Saint-Quentin-sur-Indrois, Chédigny, Azay-sur-Indre and Reignac-sur-Indre.
The smaller, south-western plain includes parts of the municipalities of Cormery, Courçay, Reignac-sur-Indre, Azay-sur-Indre, Chambourg-sur-Indre, Tauxigny, Dolus-le-Sec and Chanceaux-près-Loches. The protected bird species are the little bustard (Tetrax tetrax), the stone-curlew (Burhinus oedicnemus), the golden plover (Pluvialis apricaria), the hen harrier (Circus cyaneus), the Montagu's harrier (Circus pygargus), the short-eared owl (Asio flammeus), the merlin (Falco columbarius), the short-toed snake eagle (Circaetus gallicus), and the red-backed shrike (Lanius collurio).

The little bustard is Champeigne Tourangelle's emblematic bird. The bustard population, declining for decades, appeared to have been stabilized around 15-20 singing males recorded every year. While 4 to 6 singing males were recorded every year in the south)western area of Champeigne Tourangelle until the late 1990s, only one male, presumably not living permanently in the area, was recorded in 2007. The same year, 21 males and 8 females were recorded in the north-western area.
