The municipality of Fuenllana (271 inhabitants in 2014, 5,996 ha; municipal website) is located 110 km south-east of Ciudad Real and 70 km south of Tomelloso.

Fuenllana, once known as Fuenteplana, was established in the 13th century by the Order of Saint James. Around 1293, Fuenllana was granted the status of villa and incorporated into the Commandery of Montiel, one of the most prosperous in the area.
Fuenllana is the birth place of St. Thomas of Villanova (1488-1555; canonized on 1 November 1658 by Pope Alexander VII; biography). Ordained priest in 1518 in Salamanca, Thomas was appointed Court Preacher at Valladolid by Charles I, and, subsequently, Archbishop of Valencia (1544).
