The municipality of Peraleda del Zaucejo (530 inhabitants in 2017 vs. 2,181 in 1950; 16,370 ha; municipal website) is located 160 km south-est of Badajoz and 40 km south of Castuera, on the border with Andalusia (Province of Córdoba).

Peraleda del Zaucejo, reconquered in the middle of the 13th century, was the seat of a commandery of the Order of Alcántara, depending on the Priory of Magacela. In 1472, Commander Diego de Córdoba was allowed by Master Gómez de Cáceres y SolĂs to establih a new settlement. The founding charter prescribed the number of households to 75, that is, 300 inhabitants, none of them coming from other possessions of the Order. The colonists were exempted of tax for 10 years. Peraleda del Zaucejo was granted the status of villa in 1748 by King Ferdinand VI.
