Flag of Herrera del Duque

The flag (photo, photo) and arms of Herrera del Duque, adopted on 8 March and 17 September 1991, and 30 June 1992 by the Municipal Council and validated on 27 November 1991 and 15 September 1992 by the Assessing Council of Honors and Distinctions of the Government of Extremadura, are prescribed by an Order issued on 6 October 1992 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 20 October 1992 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 82, pp. 2,304-2,305 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Quadrangular. White with a green cross. Charged in the center with the coat of arms in full colors.
Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Or a castle on a mount all proper, 2. Argent three fesses chequy or and gules superimposed by a belt sable. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The first quarter of the arms features the once powerful castle of Herrera del Duque, erected on a rocky spur, 745 m above sea level. Of probable Moorish origin, the castle was revamped by the Order of Alcántara after the Christian reconquest.
The second quarter of the arms features the arms of the Sotomayor lineage, recalling that Gutierre de Sotomayor (1400-1453), Master of the Order of Alcántara (1432-1453), was eleveted first lord of Herrera by King John II.
