Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a red shield above a silver (=white) vaulted ark is an embattled tower topped by three torrets and flanked by two other towers, all of the same colour. In the vault is a silver(=white) shield showing a red, rampant lion, armed and tongued blue and holding a blue bunch of grapes in his right paw. The shield is flanked on both sides by five silver (=white) crosses on each side and topped by two crosses.
Meaning:
According to Ralf Hartemink's webpage the arms are mainly based upon the a seal of the former city of Blankenberg, which gained city rights in 1245. The King on a throne, which was seen in the original seal, was replaced by the arms of the counts of Berg, when they became rulers of the area. The bunch of grapes is taken from a seal of the village of Geistingen.
