Meaning:
Near the village of Gollma on the Landsberg Mountain there had been a castle since 961. It played an important role in the Bishopric of Magdeburg and was inat of an archdeacon. Margrave Dietrich the Wise from the Wettin kin completed the castle in 1147 as centre of the Eastern Marsh (German: Ostmark or Lower Lusatia). Since then the kin renamed itself as Margraves of Landsberg. The margraviate was sold to the Askanian kin of Brandenburg in 1291, was bequeathed to the Dukes of Braunschweig and repurchased in 1347 by the Wettin kin. It became a possession of the Albertinian branch of the kin in 1485 and of the Kings of Prussia in 1815. Landsberg was called a city in 1346 but only a market town in 1518. The arms with the so called Landsberg pales (German: Landsberger Pfähle) appeared first as a symbol of the margraves of the Wettin kin in the 12th century. This pattern appeared also e.g. in the arms of the cities Chemnitz and Leipzig.

According to §2 of Hauptsatzung of Landsberg City, version 8 May 2015, the city has neither official flag nor official arms, just a seal. The flags are in use unofficially. Traditional arms existed but have never been approved officially.
