Stade Coat of Arms

Shield Azure a key Argent in pale.
Meaning:
The first main seal from the 13th century displayed a gate with embattled wall and three towers topped by crosslets. A secret seal, also made before 1300 displayed an additional St. Peter in half length portrait holding his attribute, a key. He is alluding to the Archbishopric of Bremen, to which Stade belonged since 1180. Since 1272 Stade had a proper mint. Coins displayed the key alone between the 15th and 17th century, preceding the simplified arms, which apper since the beginning of the 17th century. The shield is supported by two griffins rampant Argent winged Or, armed and tongued Gules. Beneath the shield is a golden scroll with black inscription "SPQST" (= Senatus Populusque Stadensis)-
