Herrnhut Coat of Arms

Shield Argent on mount issuant Azure an odeon of the same (see left image above) or Shield Azure on mount issuant Sable an odeon Argent (see right image above).
Meaning:
Herrnhut is the abbreviation of "under the keeping of the Lord" (German:unter der Obhut des Herrn). The current city was located in the area of the village of Berthelsdorf, which was owned by the Imperial Count Nikolaus Ludwig of Zinzendorf. In 1722 the count settled Waldensian refugees from Mähren (Moravia). They had to leave their homeland due to their Protestant religion. In 1727 the count gave statutes to the settlement, which were based on a Christian social community (German: Brüdergemeine), which freed the inhabitants from the bounds of feudalism. Among others there had been houses for unmarried brothers and sisters and widows of the community. Mission of pagans started in 1732 and the community spread out all over Europe and Northern America. The administrative headquarter remained in Herrnhut. The settlement increased by influx of people not being members of the community until the middle of the 19th century. A usual municipality came to being, its mayor and the leader of the community first head been the same person. The municipality was independent since 1895 and gained city rights in 1929. The odeon on the arms is a representation of the Hutberg Altan, literally a balcony. The monument was built in the 18th century and is the landmark of the city. Before the founder designed arms based on an old seal of the Waldensians, displaying two hammers on an anvil.
