Mespelbrunn Coat of Arms

Shield Gules a porticus Argent with open door, charged with an inescutcheon Azure, parted by a bend Argent with three annulets Azure, issuant from base in the open door a hazelnut twig Argent with one nut and two leaves.
Meaning:
The Echter of Mespelbrunn kin had been of great importance for the development of Mespelbrunn. The kin acquired the village in 1412 and built a moated castle in 1419, which was rebuilt in Renaissance style between 1564 and 1569. Bishop Julius Echter of Würzburg was born in the castle in 1545. He founded the university of Würzburg and the Julius Hospital. The parish church of Hessenthal, which was incorporated into Mespelbrunn in 1972, was the sepulchre of the Echter kin, who died out in 1665. The porticus is that one of Mespelbrunn castle and the inescutcheon displays the family arms of the Echter kin. The twig is a canting element, representing Hessenthal. The name is derived from "valley of hazelnuts".
