Description of the flag

Salt Spring Island Sailing Club (British Columbia, Canada)

Estb: 1969. Location: 152 Douglas Road, Salt Spring Island, BC.
Burgee: Pennant circa 7:19 (web image). Blue field fimbriated yellow on three sides and superimposed by a yellow Indian elephant facing hoist.
"Why an elephant on a Sailing Club burgee? New members or visitors often ask this intriguing question. It came from the badge of HMS Ganges, a Royal Navy sailing ship which plied these waters in 1857-58, and the historical link HMS Ganges has with this area and our Club takes us into the archives of British naval history.”

The By-Laws tell us that:

21. CLUB FLAGS AND PENNANTS
Club yachts may wear the following flags or pennants:
- the Canadian Ensign,
- the Club pennant (Burgee)
- to be a Gold Elephant on a navy blue field, the hoist to be at masthead or at the starboard spreader,
- the flags of the Flag Officers, where appropriate, and
- any house or family flags to which they are entitled.

This burgee is not something trivial. Indeed:
7. CONDUCT OF MEMBERS
All members, whether Regular, Honorary Life, Associate, or Junior, shall be responsible to ... fly the Club burgee according to the Club regulations.
The By-Laws mention the flags of the Flag Officers, where appropriate. Other references show that these actually exist. I've been unable to determine whether these are specific flags, though, or whether they follow the most common pattern of such flags for Canada.
