Municipality

The municipality of Pescaria Brava (9,761 inhabitants in 2014; 1é,060 ha) is located 140 k south of Florianópolis.

Pescaria Brava (Wild Fishing) is of unknown etymology. Some say the name refers to courageous fishers who once fought against harsh wind and sea, while other claim that fishers got wild when it came to share fish after returning from fishing.

Pescaria Brava, Santa Catarina's youngest municipality, was established by Provincial Law No. 12,690 promulgated on 20 June 2003. The Procurator General of the Republic, however, appealed the establishment of the new municipality as anti-constitutional; the appeal was turned down on 24 August 2009 by the Federal Supreme Court, which eventually allowed the inauguration of the municipality on 1 January 2013.

Description of the Flag

The flag of Pescaria Brava is vertically divided celestial blue-white-green, charged in the center with the municipal coat of arms.

The coat of arms was selected in 2013 among 15 proposals. Designed by Luciano Machado, the winning design features the church of Senhor Bom Jesus do Socorro, fishing, agriculture, cattle-breeding, and furniture industry, therefore representing the municipality's faith and sources of income.
