Municipality

The municipality of Formosa do Sul (2,601 inhabitants in 2010; 9,990 ha) is located 630 km west of Florianópolis.

Formosa do Sul was settled in the 1950s by colonists coming from Rio Grande do Sul. Originally known as Fazenda Saudades, the settlement was named to Vila Formosa (Beautiful Town) by an Italian father. Formosa was elevated to a district of Quilombo on 25 September 1985 and a municipality on 9 January 1992.

Description of the Flag

An upright green cross, bordered yellow, on a blue field, with the municipal arms in the centre in white disk.

The flag and arms of Formosa do Sul are prescribed by Municipal Law No.5 promulgated on 15 January 1993.

Article 1.
The municipal flag [...] shall have the following characteristics.

a.1) The coat of arms shall include the date of emancipation of the municipality, "09.01 de 1992" in black letters inscribed on a red stripe containing the toponym "Formosa do Sul".
a.2) From the lower red stripe external to the shield start a maize plant with green cobs, ripe (yellow) wheat plants and bean plants with ripened pods, characterizing the main predominant crops in the municipality.
a.3) The shield features the municipality's main activities: reforestation with araucarias and native trees, on a golden yellow background, joint to a bovine's head and a pig's head, white outlined in black, symbolizing animal breeding, one of the municipality's main sources of income. In the shield's center, a red plow, the shield's dominant color, outlined in black on a brown plowed soil. On top a blue sky with five stars symbolizing the Southern Cross and identifying Formosa do Sul.
a.4) The shield surmounted by a gray crown with three towers outlined in black represented in perspective view, referring to Liberty, Union and Participation.
a.5) The tower's three red gates characterize Liberty, Equality among men, People and Government.

Article 2.
a.1) The authors of the municipal symbols (coat of arms and flag) of the municipality of Formosa do Sul are Jair Lemes da Rosa, teacher of Art Education at Escolas Cenecista Jorge Lacerda, and the heraldry designer Enir José Rambota from Estampac, São Lorenço do Oeste, Santa Catarina.

Article 5.
Colors of the municipal flag.
The municipal flag of Formosa do Sul is constituted of four colors present on the national flag, representing also the colors of the municipal coat of arms.

a.1) Blue, in the main rectangular area, representing the sky, as featured on the municipal arms.
a.2) Green, represented by two vertical and horizontal stripes, characterizing vegetation, reforestation and agriculture, bordered in yellow.
a.3) Yellow, represented by two double vertical and horizontal stripes, surrounding the green stripes, representing the municipality's mining resources.
a.4) White, represented by a circle, symbolizing purity and peace, charged with the municipal arms of Formosa do Sul.
