Municipality

The municipality of Bom Jesus do Oeste (2,146 inhabitants in 2010; 6,709 ha) is located 600 km west of Florianópolis.

Bom Jesus do Oeste was established in 1949 by Gustavo Osvaldo Sehnem, who built a sawmill to exploit Brazilian pine forests. The first mass and the designation of the place to Jesus Christ were celebrated in the sawmill.
The district of Bom Jesus do Oeste was established within Modelo by Law No. 5,412 promulgated in 1977. The municipality of Bom Jesus do Oeste was established by State Law No. 9,893 promulgated on 19 July 1995.

Description of the Flag

The flag and arms of Bom Jesus do Oeste are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 9 promulgated on 10 January 1997.

Article 2.
The coat of arms, described here in proper heraldic worlds, shall have the following symbolic interpretation
a) The Samnite shield, used to represent the arms of Bom Jesus do Oeste, was the first style of shield introduced to Portugal under French influence; inherited by Brazilian heraldry, it evokes the colonizing race and main builder of the Brazilian nation.

a1) The municipal coat of arms has also the following meaning regarding its shape, colors and details.
a2) The shield is divided into four quarters by a cross, with elements that symbolize and identify the municipality's name, culture, transport and mains crops. The background shall be celestial blue and all fields outlined in black, with the following specifications.
a3) In the upper left quarter, the municipality's livestock represented by a milk cow, a pig and a hen also symbolizing the main source of income for Bom Jesus' animal breeders.
a4) Below, in lateral left, a red tractor plowing a green, fertile and productive soil.
a5) In lateral right, a gray building representing industry and commerce with an omnibus in the foreground, symbolizing road transport in the municipality.
a6) In the shield's center, to identify the municipality's name, a beige cross charged with a bust of Jesus Christ clad in red on a white circle. A symbol of religious feeling and faith of Bom Jesus' people aspiring to a development with prosperity, union and work with the participation of all citizens.
a7) In the upper right quarter, a fruit branch with three ripe oranges symbolizing citriculture, another product contributing to the farmer's income.
a8) The shield surrounded by two maize plants each with two robust, ripening cobs, a tobacco plant on the right and a bean plant on the left, the main sources of income for Bom Jesus do Oeste's farmers.
a9) Beneath the shield a yellow stripe with its points supporting the aforementioned plants, placed horizontally, inscribed with the municipality's date of emancipation, "19/07/1995" at the ends, and the name of the municipality, "BOM JESUS DO OESTE - SC", in the center, the letters and numbers in black.
a10) The mural crown surmounting the shield is a universal domain's symbol, argent (white) with three towers represented in perspective view. It symbolizes rule, emancipation and struggle for the new municipality's development.

Article 4.
The municipal flag of Bom Jesus do Oeste shall have the same dimensions and proportions as the national flag, 14 units in width on 20 units in length.

Article 5.
The municipal flag of Bom Jesus do Oeste is composed of three colors.
b1) Celestial blue, composed of two right-angled triangles of 7 units in width and 17 units in base, the respective hypotenuses of 20 units, separated by two red stripes.
b2) Blue represents the sky, beauty, subtlety and rivers with their water.
b3) Red forms two diagonal stripes of 1 unit in width on 23 units in length, separated by a white stripe. Red is a symbol of force, bravery and courage.
b4) White forms a circle of 8 units in diameter charged with the municipal coat of arms and a diagonal stripe of 1 unit in width and 23 units in length, between the red stripes.

Article 9.
The author of the municipal symbols (flag and arms) of Bom Jesus do Oeste is Jair Lemes da Roas, from São Lourenço d'Oeste - SC, director of
Estamplac Com. de Placas e Bandeiras Ltda.
