Municipality

The municipality of Anchieta (5,721 inhabitants in 2018; 23,199 ha) is located 750 km west of Florianópolis.

Anchieta was colonized in the 1940s by Italian immigrants coming from Guaraciaba, São Miguel do Oeste and Joaçaba, and, mostly, from Rio Grande do Sul.
The name of the municipality was coined by Fathers Pedro Rubin and Afonso Correia, as a tribute to Father José de Anchieta (1534-1597; canonized in 2014 by Pope Francis), one of the first Jesuit fathers sent to Brazil. Anchieta, known as the Apostle of Brazil, is considered as the founder of the town of São Paulo.
