The municipality of Novo Machado (3,791 inhabitants in 2016; 21,833 ha) is located 520 km north-west of Porto Alegre, on the border with Argentina, here river Urucuai.

Novo Machado was successively known as Linha Machado, Povoado Machado, Vila Machado, and eventually Novo Machado, but the origin of the place name is unknown.
The municipality of Novo Machado was established by State Law No. 9,555 promulgated on 20 March 1992.

The flag and arms of Novo Machado are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 13 promulgated on 7 April 1993.

Article 1.
The coat of arms of the municipality of Novo Machado shall have the following elements and meaning.

White: Peace aspired to by all human beings.
Blue: The so cherished sky over a preserved natural environment.
Green; The vegetation and the necessity to preserve and restore the forests, the soils and water.
White outlined in green: The water resources and the necessity of plant restoration.

Scroll: (with the municipality's name and date of emancipation) union between communities.
Animals: Cattle-breeding in the municipality.
Fruits: Proposal of agricultural diversification.
Computer: The means to access modern technology.
Wheat and soybean plants; The municipality's main sources of income.
Gray: The harvested products.
Man: Work at the onset of colonization; man-made forge: origin of the name Machado ("Axe").

Article 2.
The flag of the municipality shall be composed of a white panel charged in the center with the coat of arms described in Article 1 of this Law.
