All the words in Afrikaans to do with flags are descended
from 17th Century Dutch (which does
not seem to be much different from modern Dutch as far as flags
are concerned).

germanic etym meaning
"flag"), but usually only as in "windvaan":
"vane" or "windvane".

dim. "vlaggie") means "flag",
generic term for any piece of cloth flying in the wind.

"Vaandel" (pl. "vaandels";
dim. "vaandeltjie") means "ensign".
In South Africa, vaandels are worn only by naval vessels
and flown by all the armed services of the state including the SA
Police Service.

(in South Africa mainly these days associated with advertising
banners).

but this was not adopted by the present government.
