1896 flags

While the club doesn't have a star in its burgee, it appears they have always used stars in their officers' flags. The designs of these flags have not always been the same, though. The club is listed in the American Yacht List of 1891. At that time, the officers flags were approximately 2:3 rectangular fields with a centred five-pointed star in a contrasting colour. Since the club is from 1889, this is likely the original set of officers' flags:
- Commodore: White on Blue
- Vice-Commodore: White on Red
- Rear Commodore: Blue on White

Unfortunately, this is the only version of the American Yacht List that I have access to that shows the officers' flags of the clubs. I therefore can't check whether the flags stayed in use until 1916.
Peter Hans van den Muijzenberg, 8 May 2019

For 1896, here's a funny thing: The flags are no longer the 1891 ones, but they aren't quite the versions we show for 1916 either. The patterns are the same, but each flag had three colours. Unfortunately, there are at least four colours involved, making it rather difficult to determine the actual colours. Following Peter's description, I would say the officers' flags are:
- Commodore: Black field superimposed by three horizontally spaced white stars on a light grey rhombus.
- Vice Commodore: Similar design as Commodore except light grey field with two black stars on a white rhombus.
- Rear Commodore: Similar design as Commodore except white field with one black star on a dark grey rhombus.
- Fleet Captain: Same design as Commodore except white field with black fouled anchor per bend on dark grey rhombus.
- Acting Commodore: Plain black flag.
So far I've been unable to assign colours to these four shades that match known patterns.

I have now found someone selling a copy by providing a run though on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ppuW4ZOOk8&t=50s. He doesn't actually care for the content, and will sometimes fall back into his yourfamilycrest spiel, that he's more accustomed to. Also, he goes through the pages at speed, but at approximately t=59 he shows the 118-121 page, Indian Harbor Yacht Club. It turns out, the differences in colours are only just caused by the reproduction, and in colour they are only three colours: Blue, White and Red.

That makes the flags:
- Commodore: Blue field superimposed by three horizontally spaced white stars on a red rhombus.
- Vice Commodore: Similar design as Commodore except red field with two blue stars on a white rhombus.
- Rear Commodore: Similar design as Commodore except white field with one blue star on a red rhombus.
- Fleet Captain: Same design as Commodore except white field with blue fouled anchor per bend on red rhombus.
- Acting Commodore: Plain blue flag.

Also the rhombus on the 1896 flags is/are only a third of the flag's height.
