The city council agreed on the colors in late August of 1984, being the choice of member Bruce Turkington. The final product was made by Kathleen Belmonte in late September. Over a gold field, the shipwheel logo is depicted which reads CITY OF HOMER and ALASKA divided by hyphens in its outer ring. Underneath, a ribbon reads MARCH 31, 1964; its date of incorporation. The inner ring depicts a path cutting across blue water to the mountains, representing its geography and nickname (where the land ends and the sea begins). The other details besides the water on the logo are in black and white. The shipwheel clearly is a representation of its location by the sea. Information based on the Homer News editions of the time.
