The flag of Bafra (photo) is white with the municipality's emblem, which features tobacco leaves and the Çetinkaya Bridge. "Belediyesi" means "Municipality".
The tobacco leaves recall that Bafra was once the most
important center of tobacco cultivation in Turkey.
Bafra is indeed the namesake of a tobacco cultivar, described in 1922 by
Carl Avery Werner (Tobaccoland), as follows: "Bafra tobacco is
particularly famous for its exquisite taste and aromatic quality. Most
of it is stemless. It is rather a darkish-red in color, and the leaves
are tongue-shaped."
Bafra is an old Turkish-type tobacco used historically as a pipe and
cigarette blending tobacco variety.
