The municipality of Söğütlü (14,203 inhabitants in 2020; is located 20 km north of Sakarya.

Söğütlü was first settled by nomadic Turks during Osman's rule. The first settlement was established in Soğucak , close to the river that crosses the municipality and was then lined by willows ("söğüt"). Another explanation relates the name of Söğütlü to Söğüt (province of Bilecik), the place of origin of the first settlers.
