The new logo, unveiled in February 2021, was selected in a public contest
among 332 proposals. The winning design was submitted by the photographer and
designer Ejder Bakırhan, from Tatvan. The second prize was awarded to Neslihan
Şıkman, from Trabzon, the third prize was awarded to Recep Arslan, from Mardin,
the fourth prize was awarded to Orhan Aydoğmuş, from Van, and the fourth prize
to Sinan Gümüş, from Bitlis.

The contest rules stated that "the logo should
contain a modern interpretation of one, several or all of the traditional
symbols of Bitlis such as a walnut, a castle, honey and five minarets."

The flag of Bitlis (photo) is white with the municipality's emblem in the middle. "Belediyesi" means "Municipality".
The five minarets recall a famous Turkish folk song, Bitlis'te Beş
Minare (Five Minarest in Bitlis; performed by
Oyalı Yazma and Gamze Can), which starts with "Five minarets in Bitlis / Come closer boy come closer..."

Bitlis Eren University (Bitlis Eren Üniversitesi - BEÜ) was established in 2007.
The flag of BEÜ (photo,
photo,
photo,
photo,
photo,
photo) is white with the university's emblem in the center.
The emblem is made of the "five minarets in Bitlis" forming a stylized representation
of letters "B", "E" and "Ü".
