Blazon: På blå bunn en vertikalstillet fremadbøyd sølv torsk.
In English: Azure a cod embowed argent.
Approved by the royal resolution of 30 March 1973 after a drawing by Hallvard
Trætteberg. [c2j87]
The Vågan municipality was established in the Lofotes in 1838. In 1856 the
Gimsøy municipality separated from it, and in 1918 also the Svolvær municipality.
In 1964 the two were again jointed into Vågan.
While Svolvær was its own municipality it used a coat of arms that was approved
by the Ministry of Interior on 20 January 1941 (I suppose that the approval
procedure was considerably changed while the king was sitting in London), after
a drawing by John Johns. It was a rectangular shield of "azure a cod naiant
argent between two barrules wavy of the same".
The Heraldry of
the World shows  a coloured drawing from [c2j87]
A better period
drawing
with mural crown from the local history society.
May we assume rectangular banner of arms for Svolvær between 1941 and 1964? Does
the Lovdata.no database goes that far back?
When the greater municipality was formed again in 1964 it was only natural to
retain cod as a typical Lofotes emblem, but decided to use a design that
represents more "life and strength".
