Approved by the royal resolution of 4 April 1986 after a drawing by Anne Lofthus Valla. [c2j87]
The municipal web site recounts that the idea to obtain arms was made after a proposal by the Hemnes' Rights chapter. The municipality contacted Anne Lofthus Valla with task to prepare a design. After some consultation with the state archives it was adopted in the municipal government on 28 May 1985. The design symbolizes the tradition of shipbuilding.
