Flag

Located in Wakayama City Wakayama Prefecture and established in 1948. The university flag has green background with a white emblem in the center. There is a variant where the kanji name of the university appears in white under the school emblem. The emblem is a design of the Chinese character 医for "Medicine" on the flower of the Datura, a plant used as a general anesthetic by Seishu Hanaoka, a medical saint born in Wakayama Prefecture. The Datura flower painting was created by potter Kenkichi Tomimoto and was originally painted for the medical congress held in 1963. Later, the character 医for "Medicine" was added, and after a long history of familiarity as the mark of Wakayama Medical University, it was officially recognized as the university emblem in 1987.
