Flag

Located in Suginami City Tokyo and established in 1948. The embroidered ceremonial flag has dark red background with a gold emblem in gold fringe. In the words of President Inazo Nitobe, who proposed the establishment of a school emblem at a university-wide assembly following the opening of the school in 1918, we can learn that he dreamed of a single community in the newly born Tokyo Women's University, with a Christian spirit flowing from its very foundation. He said, "I think it would be good to have something that shows the spirit of this school, the spirit of Christ. Nothing typifies this spirit more than sacrifice and service, for example. And nothing is more important than this spirit throughout your entire life. In English, it is Service and Sacrifice. You can take the two S's and put them side by side, or you can make a swastika. This is also the shape of a cross. The human being is a vertical relationship. This is the relationship between God and man, while the horizontal relationship is the fellowship between individuals and the form of the cross, which manifests sociality. This form may be the most stable form when we focus on human beings. SS also translates in Roman letters to spirit and body, to contemplation and work." This "spirit" is embodied in the school's brightly colored emblem.
