The university emblem is a graphic representation of kanji letters "市大"=City University on a background of the letter "S", the first letter of English name. The symbol mark is based on the "S" of "Shimonoseki," symbolizing the topography of Shimonoseki and the "Kanmon Straits," the symbol of the region. The central circle and the two "S's" represent the individuality and spirit of inquiry fostered and nurtured in the local climate, and the way they are boldly spreading their wings to the world, thereby promoting the spirit of the university's philosophy, "Rooted in the region, aiming for the world. The circle in the center symbolizes a university rooted in the community, and also symbolizes the luster of each student's independent personality. The harmony of the two "S's" also represents the university's philosophy of "symbiosis" and "co-creation."
