Kongunadu, or Kongu Nadu, is the western part of Tamil Nadu state. Chief
cities are Coimbatore (the second largest city in the state), Erode, Salem, Karur and Namakkal. The region is one of the most
developed parts of Tamil Nadu, with the highest urban proportion in the
state, and contributes 2/3 of the state revenue, but is thought to be often
ignored by the government, which led to formation of regional political
organizations. The initiatives for these have been coming from Kongu Vellalar,
members of Gounder caste (Kshatriya landlords), who were dominant in the
region for centuries and still form the major part of local elite.

Kongu Vellalar Goundarkal
Peravai is/was the political organization of the Gounder caste. Its flag is a
green-red horizontal bicolor with aspect ratio of 2:3. Two such flags with crossed staffs were used as the logo at the
website of the organization (link broken): www.kongulive.com.
The site seems to have been closed down not very long after Kongu Vellalar
Goundarkal Peravai founded the political party named Kongunadu Munnetra
Peravai. The party founding conference on 2009-02-15 seems to have been one
of the last occasions on which the described flag was seen. The gallery of
photos from the event can be seen here:
http://gallery.eswaranv20.com/main.php?g2_itemId=60. It is possible that the
organization no longer exists, having dissolved itself completely into the
new party, because no other appearances of its flag can be found on the Web.
The flag design was probably the basis for that of the party flag (see
below).

Kongunadu Munnetra
Kazhagam was founded on 2009-02-15 under the name of Kongunadu Munnetra
Peravai and its present name was adopted in 2010. Although founded by the
Kongu Vellalar Goundarkal Peravai, a Gounder caste organization, it intends
to represent all the people of Kongunadu, regardless of the caste. The party
flag is a green-red-yellow horizontal triband, either with all three fields
of equal width or with green and red
fields each twice as wide as the yellow one.
The aspect ratio is usually 2:3, although 3:5, and sometimes even 1:2, can be
also found. The flags with different ratios are usually used together, as
well as the flag variants with different widths of yellow field, so probably
none of these elements is meant to be precisely defined. The flag is probably
derived from that of the Kongu Vellalar Goundarkal Peravai (see above), with
the addition of a yellow field.

Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi was founded on 2013-03-21 by E.R. Eswaran,
who had previously been the Secretary general of Kongunadu Munnetra Kazhagam
[1]. Party flag has five horizontal stripes of green, yellow, red, yellow and
green. As the available sources reveal [2, 3, 4, 5], the flag ratio varies
somewhat, but 2:3 seems to prevail.
