Presentation of the University of Rijeka

The University of Rijeka is the second oldest in Croatia with uninterrupted activity. The modern University was established in 1973, continuing the tradition of the Jesuit collegium of 1632. The University is composed of nine faculties, an academy and a number of other organizations (list).

Flag of the University of Rijeka

The symbols of the University of Rijeka are prescribed in Article 11 of the University Statutes, Statut Sveučilišta u Rijeci (pročišćeni tekst), last amended on 10 December 2008 (text).
The flag is in proportions 1:2, light blue with the "arms" half the flag width in diameter. In practice, almost exclusively flags with Croatian inscriptions are used.
The "arms" of the University are circular, with a stylized depiction synthesizing several symbols: a double letter "R", an owl, a Glagolitic letter "S", but also recalling a mooring bollard (bit) and an anvil; and a stylized sea below. Surrounding it is the name in Croatian or Latin. The central symbol is prescribed to be golden-yellow on dark blue background; the outline and the text are prescribed to be dark blue with a light blue background.

Table fla of the University of Rijeka, two versions - Images by Željko Heimer, 15 January 2016

The University adopted in 2010 its Book of Graphical Standards (Priručnik grafičkih standarda, Sveučilište u Rijeci, PDF file), "after the proposal by the professional team from the Academy of Applied Arts".

The book does not superseded the Statutes that prescribe the University flag, but it does not mention the flag at all, however, it does prescribe table flags in accordance with the "updated" visual identity. According to the book the "original version of the emblem and the logo is no longer used in business communication". The book is ambiguous, but seems to prefer the Croatian inscription version for the "new version", while the "original" is shown in both Croatian and Latin variations. The new version is monocoloured and not tricolour as the "original", however, the use of the "original" version, while discouraged, is allowed.

The table flag is shown in two versions, in proportions somewhat shorter than 1:2.
The first version is a white flag with the blue emblemin the centre over the University name in Croatian inscribed in bold letters, over the name in English ,inscribed in regular letters, and in the base the URL of the University website inscribed in regular, Helvetica Neue font.
The second version is blue with "fountain fill" effect and the emblem and inscriptions in blue.
