The municipality of Paiania (26,668 inhabitants in 2011, 4,714 ha) was established in 2011 as the merger of the two former municipalities of Glyka Nera (Γλυκά Νερά, 11,049 inh.) and Paiania (15,619 inh.).

Glyka Nera (lit., Sweet Waters) is a suburbs in the northeastern part of Athens. Glyka Nera is situated on the eastern slope of the northernmost part of the forested Hymettus (Υμηττός) mountain.

The flag of Glyka Nera (Kokkonis website) was blue with a white disk bearing the municipal emblem - a statue with two lions.
