The municipality of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie (7,655 inhabitants in 2017; 1,046 ha) is a seaside resort and fishing harbor, specializing in sardines, situated on the Côte de Lumière (Coast of Light).

In the 9th century, the monks of Saint-Michel-en-l'Herm, venerating Saint Giles the Hermit, settled in Sidunum, creating a priory and a fortified church. In the Middle Ages, the town of Saint-Gilles-sur-Vie became an important port. Croix-de-Vie appeared on the right bank of the river Vie during the 16th century, when the Duke of Montausier granted to sailors from Saint-Gilles plots of land on the "small island" so they could build their homes.
The development of railway from the 1880s increasingly allowed holidaymakers to reach the seaside town. On 23 January 1967, Saint-Gilles-sur-Vie and Croix-de-Vie merged to create the new municipality of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie.

Azure an anchor or, 2. Gules, semy of fleur-de-lis or". On the logo, the anchor is red and the sinister field light blue.
