La Lande-Chasles (120 inhabitants in 2021; 517 ha) is a commune in the Maine-et-Loire department, part of the Communauté d'agglomération Saumur Val de Loire.

In the Middle Ages, there was a fortified castle which was largely demolished and the current castle was rebuilt in the Second Empire. It is surrounded by a park. The foundations of a city dating from the Gallo-Roman period have been found. The Saint-Jean church was listed as a historical monument in 1984.

The coat of arms, created by Laurent Lailly [heraldic projet "blason de france" website] was approved by deliberation of the municipal council in 2015. It is blazonned: Party per fess embattled, 1. Vert a pinecone Or, flanked by two pines also Or stemmed Sable issuant from the partition, 2. Or a squirrel Gules.

A forest of pines, chestnuts, oaks... surrounds the town and is present on almost half of its area. The squirrel is the symbol of foresight, agility, vivacity and independence and of course of the wooded lands. The pine cone symbolizes the immortality of plant and animal life [source: municipal website].

The municipal coat of arms has been elected the most beautiful coat of arms in France following a contest organized on Twitter by @HT_Glt in May 2020. The village won with particular enthusiasm, beating the coats of arms of major cities. It gave to La Lande-Chasles a remarkable visibility having made its way to the 1 PM daily news on French TV channel TF1 [source : TV Channel TF1 website].

The French vexillological society (SFV) proposed to the Mayor the idea of giving a flag to the municipality and decided to accompany the municipality to create the flag. Several examples were provided in order to show the municipal council that it was possible to play with the coat of arms and its charges. The flag, the "logical" banner of arms, was adopted by the municipal council a few weeks later in June 2020 and was then officially presented on September 2020 in a ceremony with guests including three Senators as well as the President of the Communauté d'agglomération Saumur Val de Loire. The same day, a coat of arms of the village made in mosaic was affixed to the facade of the town hall [sources: communiqué by the SFV; Ouest-France local newspaper].

Before 2020, the village had a local flag for ceremonial purposes. In 2018, this flag being worn out, especially with faded colors, the village decided to buy a new one, which was expensive for a little municipal council. The former flag was a Tricolore, with the words "Mairie de La Lande-Chasles" in golden letters.

A crowdfunding was decided to get a new flag: it would be a Tricolore with the coat of arms of the village in the white part and the words "Commune" "La Lande-Chasles" on the obverse. A municipal motto was to be written on the reverse. After a vote by the inhabitants in may 2019, the motto was chosen and adopted by the municipal council un june. The motto is "Nature et Calme". The new flag was unveiled in July 2019 for the village's annual day [Source: municipal website].
