Presentation of Polopos

The municipality of Polopos (1,847 inhabitants in 2014; 2,658 ha; municipal website) is located 110 km south of Granada. The municipality is made of the vlllages of Polopos, La Mamola (1,198 inh., municipal seat), La Guapa (194 inh.), Castillo de Baños de Abajo (94 inh.), Castillo de Baños de Arriba (80 inh.), Haza del Lino and Haza del Trigo (147 inh.).
Polopos is the last place in Spain where direct distance dialling was set up (December 1988).

Polopos was incorporated to the domain of Albuñol after the Christian reconquest. To face the threat of pirate's raids, several fortifications were establishyed near the coast, such as the Cautor tower in La Mamola (16th century) and the castle of Baños, the namesake of Castillo de Baños (18th century).

Symbols of Polopos

The flag of Polopos, adopted on 26 June 1997 by the Municipal Council, is prescribed by Decree No. 231, adopted on 10 November 1998 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 5 December 1998 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 139, p. 14,972 (text). This was confirmed by a Resolution adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).
The flag is described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3, made of three vertical stripes in proportions 1/4, 1/2 and 1/4, the outer red and the central checky of 25 pieces, 13 black and 12 white; on five rows and five columns.

The flag is derived from the banner represented of the coat of arms.

The coat of arms of Polopos, adopted on 28 September 1989 by the Municipal Council and validated on 14 June 1991 by the Royal Academy of History, is prescribed by Decree No. 162, adopted on 27 August 1991 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 18 October 1991 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 92, p. 8,939 (text). This was confirmed by a Resolution adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).
The coat of arms is described as follows:

Coat of arms: Or a tower or surrounded by two poplars proper on a base of the same ensigned by a flag gules charged with a shoe [zapato] checky or and sable in base waves azure and argent a fish proper. The shield surmounted by a Royal Spanish crown.

The tower recalls the local fortifications. The flag bears the canting arms of the Zapata, lord of Polopos. The trees recall the etymology of Polopos, from Latin populus, "a poplar". The waves and the fish represent the sea and fishing, respectively.
