Overview

Adopted: 5 May 1992. Ratio: 7:11. Rae is a rural municipality (vald) in Harju County (Maakond).
Dov Gutterman ,12 January 1999

Rae vald - Black fields and silver cross symbolize the connection with the first Estonian bible. Leafs of oak are connected to some local legend. Red fields with silver cross refer to Harjumaa and to the name of municipality Rae (raad is old Estonian word meaning city council, connection with Tallinn).
Erki Kurrikoff, 6 April 2001

The symbols of Rae Municipality are its coat of arms and flag; notably, these were the first municipal symbols adopted in re-independent Estonia. They were entered into the state register on May 5, 1992. The coat of arms and flag were designed by Priit Herodes. Additionally, a logo created for the municipality's 150th anniversary is in use. The flag of Rae Municipality is a rectangular white field with a width-to-length ratio of 7:11, featuring three horizontal blue stripes and the image of the municipal coat of arms in the center.

Coat of Arms

At the center of the Rae Municipality coat of arms is a silver cross that divides the shield into four sections. The upper-left and lower-right fields are black, while the upper-right and lower-left fields are red. The black fields feature a stylized silver oak leaf. The black fields, combined with the silver cross, symbolize the municipality's connection to the publication of the first Estonian-language Bible and to local farming traditions. The oak leaves represent a local legend regarding the "bride and groom" oaks and are linked to the Lehmja oak forest. The red fields, together with the silver cross, allude to a shared heraldic heritage with Harju County and the Tallinn City Council.
