The symbols of Pastaza are prescribed in Order No. 12, adopted on 6 October 2003 by the Province Council. The Preamble of the Order says that the provincial symbols were originally created on 23 March 1971 and reformed on 13 February 1996.
The 2003 Order is another reform, caused by the modification of the demarcation of the border with Peru resulting from the peace treaty, to be reflected in the coat of arms.
