Noyan: 43.79 km² 1,300 inhabitants
The municipality of Noyan (1,392
inhabitants in 2016; 5,000 ha) is located on the border with Vermont (USA).
Noyan is named for its first lord, Pierre-Jacques Payen de Noyan et de
Chavoy (1695-1771)), naval officer, King's Lieutenant in Trois-Rivières and
Major of Montreal (1749-1756). The grant of the domain, dated 1733, was
confirmed by the king of France in 1745. Highly estimated as one of
Nouvelle-France's best officers, Noyan never took possession of his domain,
which his wife sold in 1764 to Gabriel Christie and John Campbell.
Established as Foucault in 1845, the municipality was incorporated in 1847 to
the municipality of the County of Rouville, to be re-established in 1855 as the
municipality of the Parish of Saint-Thomas-de-Foucault, eventually renamed to
Noyan in 1976.
The Treaty of Washington, which fixed the local border between
Canada and the USA, was signed in 1842 in the village.
