The municipality of São Carlos (11,369 inhabitants in 2020; 15,899 ha) is
located 600 km north-west of Florianópolis.
São Carlos was settled in
1927 by colonists of German origin coming from Rio Grande do Sul; the
colonization was organized by Companhia Territorial Sul Brasil led by Carlos
Culmey. Established as a district within the municipality of Chapecó on 1
December 1938, São Carlos was elevated a municipality by State Law No. 133
promulgated on 30 December 1953, which was inaugurated on 21 February 1954.
The first colonists, Gustavo Johann, João Sehnem, Arthur Heydt and Willibaldo
Sehnem, sailed via rivers Uruguai and Chapecó to a place they called Porto dos
Cantadores (The Singers' Port) because they spent all their idle time singing
old songs.
