The municipality of Santiago do Sul (1,389 inhabitants in 2014; 7,356 ha) is
located 570 km west of Florianópolis.
Santiago do Sul was established in
1951, as Barra Grande, by brothers Reinaldo, Honório and João Saretto, coming
from Garibaldi (Rio Grande do Sul). They were joined in 1953 by several other
colonists of Italian origin. Augusto Picolli proposed to change the name of the
settlement to São Tiago (St. James), after the patron saint.
The district of
Santiago do Sul was established, within the municipality of Quilombo, by
Municipal Law No. 707 promulgated on 10 March 1988, and elevated a municipality
by State Law No. 9,535 promulgated on 16 April 1994, which was inaugurated on 1
January 1997.
