The municipality of Jaguaruna (19,254 inhabitants in 2016; 32,946 ha) is 
located 150 km south-west of Florianópolis.
Jaguaruna emerged as a feudal 
domain granted in 1804 to Domingos Fernandes de Oliveira. Colonel Luiz Francisco 
Pereira, coming from Plahoça, settled the place in 1867. He was joined the next 
year by Joaquim Marques, Francisco Rebelo, Manoel Marques and other colonists 
coming from Garopaba and Aratingaúba.
The municipality of Jaguaruna was 
established by Provincial Law No. 38 promulgated on 6 January 1891, separating 
from Laguna. Suppressed on 30 August 1923, the municipality was re-established 
by State Decree No. 25 issued on 11 December 1930.

The flag of Jaguaruna is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 356 promulgated on 
29 June 1979.
Article 1.
The municipal flag shall have the following 
heraldic description: Composed of a single field, blue, charged in the center 
with the coat of arms of the municipality on a white circle.
Article 2.
The coat of arms of the municipality established by Law No. ... promulgated in 
June 1979 shall be placed in the center of a white circle.
Article 2.
I. The flag's size shall be of 1.30 m in length on 0.90 m in width.
II_ The 
circle shall have a radius of 0.25 m.

The coat of arms of Jaguaruna is prescribed 
by Municipal Law No. 355 promulgated on 29 June 1979.
Article 1.
The 
coat of arms of the municipality shall have the following blazon and appended 
description: Iberian shield. in the upper quarter two stylized black jaguar's 
heads on a yellow field, [in the middle quarter] two crossed stylized tridents 
on a net and a blue field, in the lower quarter a stylized sun over stylized 
waves. A yellow mural crown and the word "Jaguaruna" on a yellow scroll 
inscribed with date "20.12.1930".
Appendix
Heraldic elucidation.
Shield: Known as Iberian, with the point formed by a semi-circle, in use in 
Portugal, namely at the time of Brazil's discovery and colonization. According 
to our heraldists, this is the best emblem for Brazilian towns. In Brazilian 
heraldry, it evokes the origin of the race to which Portuguese contributed as 
the main element.
Mural crown: With four towers, this is the proper and 
consecrated emblem of municipalities and of their administrative autonomy.
Motto: "Jaguaruna" on a yellow scroll.
Date: "20.12.1930", as the date of 
political emancipation of the municipality.
Cassava and rice plants: 
Represent the municipality's main crops.
Two stylized black jaguar's heads: A 
tribute to the municipality's name, which means "Black jaguar" in Tupi-Guarani.
Two stylized tridents crossed over a stylized net and a white background: 
Represent one of the municipality's sources of income, fishing. The trident is 
the scepter of Neptune, King of the Sea.
Stylized sun over stylize waves: 
Represents the beaches located in the municipality, which will be in the future 
a source of income.
