Municipality

The municipality of Soledade (31,002 inhabitants in 2019; 121,340 ha) is located 220 km north of Porto Alegre. The municipality is composed of the districts of Soledade (seat), Pinhal, Santa Terezinha and Bugre.

Soledade originates in the opening in 1810 of the Picada do Botucaraí, which facilitated immigration to the mountainous region of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Soldade do Botucaraí.
The municipality of Soledade was established in 1875. That year, the German traveler Maximiliano Beschoren reported that "trade of agates, which are exported in great numbers, is the only source of income ".
