Municipality

The municipality of Lagoa Bonita do Sul (2,662 inhabitants in 2010; 10,850 ha) is located 230 km north-west of Porto Alegre.

Lagoa Bonita do Sul was known until 1928 as Lagoa de Raia. The municipality of Lagoa Bonita do Sul was established by State Law No. 10,758 promulgated on 16 April 1996, separating from Sobradinho. The Governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Antônio Britto, opposed to the emancipation, which was eventually validated in 2000 by the State Supreme Court.
