The municipality of Horizontina (19,329 inhabitants in 2019; 22,974 ha) is
located 500 km north-west of Porto Alegre.
Horizontina was established on
18 September 1927 by Engineer Frederico Jorge Logemann, as Belo Horizonte
colony, part of the municipality of Santo Ângelo. The first masoned house, built
by Dahne e Conceição & Cia, was used as its administrative seat by the
Colonization Service. Transferred in 1931 to the newly established municipality
of Santa Rosa, the colony was elevated to the district of Vila Horizonte in
1937. To prevent confusion with the big town of Belo Horizonte, the district was
renamed to Horizontina in 1943.
The municipality of Horizontina was
established by State Law No. 2,556 promulgated on 18 December 1954, and
inaugurated on 28 February 1955.
Horizontina was awarded the title of
"National Cradle of Combine Harvesters", after the building of Brazil's first
harvester in 1965 and the establishment of a production unit by the John Deere
company.
Walter Bündchen (1916-2010) was Mayor of Horizontina from 1971 to
1975 and President of the local Chamber of Commerce; he is mostly known as the
grand-father of the supermodel Gisele Bündchen (b. 1980 in Horizontina or Três
de Maio)
