Municipality

The municipality of Fazenda Vilanova (3,697 inhabitants in 2010; 85 sq. km) is located in eastern central Rio Grande do Sul, 100 km of Porto Alegre. Fazenda Vilanova might have been named for an old estate ("fazenda") owned by the Vilanova family. The town developed along the Federal Road BR-386 (445 km), which links Iraí, on the border with Santa Catarina, to Canoas, joining there BR-116; Federal Law No. 11,620 of 19 December 2007 named the road "Governador Leonel de Moura Brizola". In 1972, the "águia Azul" gas station, the "Figueira" restaurant and the "Cardoso" general stores were built near the "Mallmann" shop, itself there since the 1950s. The district of Fazenda Vilanova was established within the municipality of Bom Retiro do Sul by Municipal Law No. 708 of 16 May 1983 and inaugurated on 29 January 1984. The municipality of Fazenda Vilanova was established by a State Law No. 10,642 of 28 December 1995, following a plebiscite organized on 22 October 1995.
