Municipality

The municipality of Eldorado do Sul (38,581 inhabitants in 2017; 51,099 ha) is located on the delta or river Jacuí (protected area), 10 km west of Porto Alegre.

Eldorado do Sul was originally settled in the middle of the 18th century by pioneers coming from the Azores, led by Jerônimo de Ornellas. In 1930s, the left bank of river Guaíba emerged as a sea resort for the inhabitants of Porto Alegre and a port for the boats heading to the capital. In the 1960s, German colonists settled the place as Balneário Sans Souci.
The municipality of Eldorado do Sul was established on 8 June 1988.
